Every year we choose a theme and memory verse for the church to consider throughout the year. Our theme this year is “BE BRAVE IN 2017”. Our memory verse is Romans 1:16 – “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.”
The gospel is Jesus, who He is, what He’s done, and what He is still doing. What sounds like good news to us can sound like awful, ridiculous, or offensive news to others. Why? The gospel informs us that we are failures, cannot fix ourselves, and only Jesus can help. The gospel goes against the grain of the self-esteem movement, the do-it-yourself mantra, and the “there are many ways to God” relativism of the age.
So why isn’t Paul ashamed of the gospel when others were and some still are? Because he knew the gospel was God’s powerful way of doing what no earthly power ever could. Like dynamite brings down a dilapidated building, Jesus brings down all our sin and shame which holds us hostage on death row and infuses us with the righteousness of God. In other words, we are forgiven of our sins and awarded with Jesus’ righteousness!
Well, not everyone is. Only those who believe are. Faith is the switch which invites the gospel into our lives and changes everything! Do you believe the gospel?
The most common command in the Bible is “Don’t be afraid.” We may be afraid of how the gospel will change our lives, set us apart from our peers, or make life more difficult. Let’s be brave and believe the gospel, share the gospel, and suffer for the gospel in 2017!
